Lipomas/Cysts
Lipomas are benign, slow-growing lumps made up of fatty tissue. They are typically soft, movable, and painless.
Cysts are sacs that can form under the skin and may contain fluid, keratin, or other material. They are often smooth, round, and can become swollen, tender, or inflamed if irritated or infected.
Both are generally harmless, but new, rapidly growing, painful, firm, or changing lumps should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

Lipomas are benign, slow-growing lumps made of fatty tissue. The exact cause is often unknown, but genetics may play a role, and they can sometimes run in families.
Cysts are sac-like growths beneath the skin that can contain fluid, keratin, or other material. They may develop when a skin structure, such as a hair follicle, becomes blocked or damaged. Some cysts can also develop after inflammation or injury.
Most lipomas and cysts are harmless, but you should see a dermatologist if a lump is:
-
New or rapidly growing
-
Painful, tender, or swollen
-
Red, warm, or draining
-
Firm, fixed, or unusually deep
-
Changing in appearance
-
Persistent or causing discomfort
Any new or unexplained lump is also worth having evaluated to confirm the diagnosis and determine whether treatment is needed.
Lipomas
-
Observation: Most lipomas don’t require treatment if they are stable and not bothersome.
-
Surgical removal: The lipoma can be completely removed, particularly if it is growing, painful, or bothersome.
Cysts
-
Observation: Small, uncomplicated cysts can often be left alone.
-
Steroid injection: May help reduce inflammation in an inflamed cyst.
-
Drainage: Can provide temporary relief when a cyst is swollen or infected, but the cyst may return.
-
Surgical excision: Removing the entire cyst and its lining offers the best chance of preventing recurrence.
If a cyst is actively inflamed or infected, definitive removal is often delayed until the inflammation has improved.
