Seborrheic Dermatitis Explained
Seborrheic dermatitis (seb derm) is a common, chronic skin condition that causes redness, itching, and flaky or greasy scales, most often on the scalp, face, eyebrows, ears, and chest. It tends to flare periodically and can usually be managed with medicated shampoos and topical treatments.

Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to result from a combination of oil production, skin sensitivity, and an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast called Malassezia. Stress, cold or dry weather, hormonal changes, and certain illnesses can trigger or worsen flare-ups.
Common symptoms include:
-
Flaking or dandruff on the scalp
-
Red or irritated skin
-
Itching or burning
-
Greasy or yellowish scales
-
Dry, flaky patches around the eyebrows, nose, ears, or beard area
-
Scalp scaling or crusting in more severe cases
Symptoms often come and go, with periods of flare-ups and improvement.
Treatment focuses on controlling inflammation, reducing scaling, and managing flare-ups:
-
Medicated shampoos: Ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or salicylic acid can help control scalp flaking.
-
Antifungal treatments: Topical antifungals such as ketoconazole can reduce Malassezia yeast.
-
Topical corticosteroids: Short courses can help calm redness and itching during flares.
-
Non-steroid anti-inflammatory creams: Treatments such as pimecrolimus or tacrolimus may be used for sensitive areas, particularly the face.
-
Maintenance treatment: Using medicated shampoo or topical therapy periodically can help prevent recurrent flares.
Treatment depends on the location and severity of symptoms, and seborrheic dermatitis often requires ongoing maintenance.
